Band From TV: Well Known Faces Making a Difference
by Ramona Zacharias
News from the entertainment world is often mindless, at best. Who’s cheating on whom, who’s lip-synching to what, who’s beating up whose girlfriend…there seems to be a real pull towards bottom-feeding.
Isn’t it nice to know that, in the midst of all this, there’s a group of guys using their fame and talent to give back to the community?
The Men in the Band
“Meet” Greg Grunberg, Hugh Laurie, Bob Guiney, Jesse Spencer, Adrian Pasdar, James Denton, and Scott Grimes. Individually, you know them from primetime shows like Heroes, House, Desperate Housewives, and the much-missed ER. But collectively, they’re Band From TV, combining their musical talents on stage to raise money for various charities.
Spearheaded by Grunberg, the idea came to him some years back, when he was still playing Sean Blumberg on Felicity. Asked to perform with a few other people at the House of Blues, Grunberg saw all the media attention the gig generated and something clicked. Over time he connected with his now-fellow bandmates and Band From TV was born. “It came together piece by piece,” he says. “But then all of a sudden, it just took off. We’ve raised over 2 million dollars in the past three years!”
“Greg and I became friends at a charity event in Dallas, where my band (The Bob Guiney Band) was performing,” remembers Bob Guiney, 2003’s The Bachelor. “I was a huge fan of his on Alias! He said, ‘You and I need to be in a band together.’ We started to jam with Hugh and James and a week later we had our first gig opening for Mick Fleetwood and Macy Gray!”The Music
“I think the title of our CD says it all,” laughs Grunberg, referring to Hoggin’ All the Covers (available in CD and DVD format through Amazon). “We really don’t take ourselves too seriously; we know the key to our success is familiar faces playing familiar music.”
Seven Hectic Schedules...And a New Rehearsal Space
So when do seven guys with the schedules they have find the time to practice, let alone perform? “We do that whole email back and forth thing,” laughs Jesse Spencer. “’I can do Tuesday’, ‘Nah, can’t do Tuesday, I can do Wednesday’, ‘Nope, no Wednesday’…But now we have our own rehearsal space, which is very nice and long overdue.”
“It’s great,” enthuses Grunberg. “It was outfitted by Sears, Home Goods and Proscan TV. We’ve received a lot of support. It allows us to put everything we make towards the charities.”
